So, now that I am a Catholic, I am stuck in a stiff religion with Traditions and rituals that only hinder my personal relationship with Christ, right?
Religion is not bad.
“Catholic things” like the Rosary, the beauty of the Liturgy, observing Lent, Holy Water, making the sign of the cross, the burning of incense and many other things -Tradition, “rituals”, are not bad.
In my short experience of being a Catholic, the “extras”, instead of distracting me from Christ, actually encourage me to focus on Christ and encourage me to think of more ways I can share his amazingness with the people around me.
I have found that the Traditions of the Catholic Church are there for specific reasons. Sadly, they seem to get in the way for many people, at one time myself included. Yet, each Tradition, or “ritual,” has a purpose: to point you to God. Each Tradition has roots deep in the early Church that the Fathers of the Church preached about, and wrote about many of them in the Bible, because many of them were instituted by Jesus Christ himself.
“These “religious” things which I would’ve once dismissed as getting in the way of Christ all point, profoundly, to Christ Himself.
“It only took me understanding them.
“So, no, in my experience and, in my opinion, in the history of Christianity it’s wrong to say that religion is bad.” – The Cordial Catholic
So, is it a Religion, or a Relationship?
It is not, either or, it is both and.
Both Religion and a Relationship.
This past year, my faith in God has become far more real, beautiful and tangible than it has ever been in my entire life.
